DNS Introduction with Chris Lavelle (copy)
DYNAMIC NEUROMUSCULAR STABILISATION (DNS) FOR PILATES TEACHERS
AN INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP WITH CHRIS LAVELLE
Instructor: Chris Lavelle
Location: Me Pilates Studio, Melbourne
Price: $125
What is DNS?
Dynamic neuromuscular stabilization (DNS) is a movement strategy for optimising stability of the spine and extremities. It is based on the understanding that ideal movement patterns develop innately from birth through the Central Nervous System (CNS). DNS demonstrates how these natural patterns can be re-accessed in adulthood - even when posture or movement quality has deteriorated. Joseph Pilates emphasised the natural movement of babies - DNS explains the neuro-physiology behind it.
When used in Pilates, DNS accelerates and enhances client outcomes by:
- Promoting ideal stabilization through proper breathing techniques, training the diaphragm in its dual functions of respiration and stabilisation
- Activating muscles according to correct physiological function, improving both muscle balance and joint centration—addressing many postural issues and pain syndromes
- Helping prevent injury and degeneration by exercising the joints, not just the muscles
- Naturally improving body awareness by reawakening the CNS's innate movement patterns
What will the workshop be about?
The workshop is a ‘taste test’ for those interested in the DNS for PILATES certification program. I will introduce you to DNS concepts, teach you some developmental positions and lead you through some DNS Pilates on the apparatus and mat. If you like what you experience, you can think about enrolling in the Pilates specific DNS certification. Part 1 is running 22nd - 24th October 2025, at Renae Blackmores Pilates studio, Wamberal, NSW.
About Chris
I have been a Pilates practitioner since 1996, training under Romana Kryzanowska and Cynthia Lochard. In 2014, I became a certified DNS Exercise Trainer through the Prague School of Rehabilitation. Incorporating DNS into my own practice not only made me pain-free but also transformed my movement and teaching.
DNS aligns closely with the core principles of Pilates. To bridge these two systems, I collaborated with a Prague School physiotherapist and DNS educator to adapt the DNS Exercise Trainer certification specifically for Pilates instructors. The result? A unique pathway that makes the proven science of DNS accessible, practical, and highly relevant for Pilates teachers.
What other Pilates practitioners are saying about DNS
* DNS principles should form the basis of any movement methodology or exercise prescription. Chris's ongoing support and dedication are amazing - It's changed my life! Jo, Tasmania
* I feel very fortunate for the weekly classes conducted by Chris Lavelle that demonstrate the endless range of implementations of DNS concepts for diverse populations. De, Sydney
* Not only has my own body improved in strength, understanding and alignment, the tools that I can offer my clients to feel empowered in their movement have expanded tenfold. Kim, NSW
